Resolutions - All Commonwealth, State and Territories

1.Support the recommendations of the Northern Territory Emergency Response Review Board Report, particularly that:

a.The Australian and Northern Territory Governments recognise as a matter of urgent national significance the continuing need to address the unacceptably high level of disadvantage and social dislocation being experienced by Aboriginal Australians living in remote communities throughout the Northern Territory.

b. In addressing these needs both governments acknowledge the requirement to rest their relationship with Aboriginal people based on genuine consultation, engagement and partnership.

c. Government actions affecting the Aboriginal communities respect Australia’s human rights obligations and conform with the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.

d. The current blanket application of compulsory income management in the Northern Territory cease.

2.Ensure that all government agencies (including police and lawyers) working with Aboriginal people and communities are provided with cross-cultural training (identified as appropriate by the specific Aboriginal community) prior to commencing work in those communities.

3. Recommend the cooperative use by state and commonwealth agencies of information and resources relevant to the care and protection of children.
